It’s the last day of 2020 (can you give me an Amen?!), and I still don’t know what my new Word-of-the-Year (WOY)–“RESET”–means. Well, not with specificity, anyway. And I love specificity—black and white vs. areas of gray.

I’m the one who always had my Five Year Plan at my fingertips, with detailed goals, objectives and methodologies for accomplishing it laid out well in advance and assessed every step of the way. I didn’t need a boss or God to push me: I was the pusher.

Now there is just empty space in front of me. A whole year. Undefined and unplanned.

So what’s next, Lord?

Scripture:

Genesis 22:11: “At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!”

&

Exodus 3:4: “When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied.”

&

Isaiah 6:8: “Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”

Application

Huh. Abraham, Moses and Isaiah each had the same response when God called:

Here I am.

Ready, willing and fully available to move when God said move.

Maybe my 2021 RESET is about letting go of my compulsive need to plan so as to respond with that same spirit of readiness when God’s plans for me in this new year unfold.

Prayer:

Here I am, Lord. I know that’s the right position to take, but I’m not all in at this point. My mind goes to all of those unformed yet still rock-solid dreams for 2021, and I want to ask You to fit Your plans into mine!

Please forgive me for being such a control freak, and help me learn how to reset in this new season of life. Please increase my patience, my listening skills and my willingness to follow when I hear You call. And let me be active in the waiting:

Amen.

One Comment

  • Reset. Good word. I know I’d like to push the ESC button or even DELETE when it comes to 2020. But we both know 2021 will have plenty opportunities for ENTER, UP, DOWN and best of all FORWARD. Happy New Year Mary!!
